The Zingaro Reserve is symbolised by the dwarf palm, typical vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub, together with the very rare limonium and more than 650 other species of ephemeral herbs, many of which flower between March and May, turning the Reserve into a palette of brilliant colours; on the slopes of the Zingaro’s hills there are carobs, olives, almonds, ash trees and a small number of cork trunks.

The Reserve, which can only be visited on foot or on horseback, is home to around 40 species of nesting birds, including Bonelli’s eagle, the buzzard, the kite, the kestrel, the hoopoe, the peregrine falcon, the barn owl, the tawny owl, the little owl, the wren and the Cetti’s warbler. Among the other species living in the Reserve are the weasel, the fox and the porcupine, as well as a great variety of smaller fauna that has made its habitat here.

L’aspra bellezza esaltata dal mareRugged beauty enhanced by the sea

The rugged beauty of the Zingaro, with its unspoilt nature, is enhanced by the sea, the constant backdrop of a landscape where high rock faces plunging into the sea alternate with inlets harmoniously sloping towards an unusually turquoise sea, creating small white pebbly bays that are set into it like pearls on a precious fabric.

For enthusiasts, the underwater landscape is also a kaleidoscope of shapes and colours: in a sea displaying every possible shade of green-blue live vivid madrepore octopuses with their orange hues, yellow, purple and red sponges and, in the depths, red coral; the fish in these waters also have brightly coloured liveries, such as the blennies and the wrasses.

In the reserve, peaks of a thousand metres coexist with underwater caves, sinkholes and karst phenomena, dolomitic walls and small coves separated by sharp rocks, caves that testify to the presence of ancient human settlements — such as the Grotta dell’Uzzo, where traces going back eight thousand years have been found — and farmhouses recalling a more recent rural civilisation.

Inside the reserve are the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Maritime Activities and the Museum of Rural Life, as well as numerous equipped areas and rural buildings used for bivouacking, on the sole condition of respecting nature, not littering and not polluting.
