The “Salt Road” runs from Trapani to Marsala and offers a unique and evocative route, with its white expanses of salt and its windmills, which echo ancient rhythms of life and labour. Along the salt road you come across some beautifully restored windmills and the Salt Museum, where the old working tools of the salt workers are displayed.
The salt itinerary crosses the “Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans” and “Stagnone Islands” Nature Reserves, a habitat of considerable naturalistic interest, rich in flora and fauna, home to numerous species of resident and migratory birds, including the very rare flamingos.
The salt pans were probably established in Phoenician times, although it was only from the 15th century that extraction accelerated sharply, becoming an important resource in the city’s economy and giving the port of Trapani such impetus as to make it one of the leading ports of the Mediterranean, especially after the opening of the Suez Canal.
Today many salt pans have been reactivated and have restored the old working system, recreating a case of “productive natural environment” that is hard to replicate; the traditional management of the salt pans, where the salt is harvested by hand and undergoes no processing, has allowed the spread of a quality product protected from an environmental point of view, as well as the establishment of significant fish farms. Besides the particular specificity of the places, the “Salt Road” also offers a nature route of considerable interest and rarity, not least for the unusual environmental respect shown by the productive activities based there.
The “Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans Reserve”, which largely coincides with the “Salt Road”, extends south of Trapani. The reserve, managed by the WWF, is the ideal habitat for numerous animal and plant species. Among basins and channels, bagli and windmills, you can discover a whole unsuspected world, made up of micro-organisms dating back to the beginnings of life on the planet, and of a great variety of birds that find in this unspoilt corner of the world rest and food during their migrations.
A total of 196 bird species have been recorded, including herons, gulls, waders, flamingos, spoonbills, marsh harriers and also avocets, wagtails, little terns and plovers, as well as numerous varieties of insects found only in the reserve.
The plant species within the reserve are adapted to the salinity of the environment, where plants of scientific interest are present, some of them at risk of extinction. Among the reserve’s attractions is a rare parasitic plant known as the “Maltese fungus”, found in only a few coastal areas of Sardinia and Basilicata, as well as in the area between Trapani and Marsala.
The Salt Pans Reserve therefore offers a variety of attractions: from the scientific observation of a world of its own to the study of an ancient and still current craft such as salt harvesting; from cultural interest in the numerous remains of industrial archaeology, such as the windmills, to the contemplation of landscapes, environments and colours, all different and incomparable.
