Il promontorio e le caleThe headland and the coves

The “Monte Cofano Nature Reserve”, on the road between Trapani and San Vito, offers one of the most interesting walks on the Costa Gaia. The coast has an easily walkable path and a crystal-clear sea against which stands a massive dolomitic limestone headland covered by Mediterranean scrub.

For the braver visitors who tackle the climb to the summit (659 m), the reward is a breathtaking view in every direction. The reserve has steep rock faces to the north-west, while towards the south-west they create a series of small coves with crystal-clear, unspoilt water.

Along the shore there are several caves of considerable archaeological and palaeontological interest, in particular those of Scurati, which show traces of settlements dating back to the Upper Palaeolithic. Inside the reserve there are also two towers, San Giovanni and the Tonnara, which formed part of the system of fortifications defending against pirates. Every year an evocative living nativity scene is staged in the Grotta Mangiapane at Scurati.
