The Bosco di Alcamo Reserve is one of the smallest protected areas in Sicily and is reached along the Trapani/Palermo road, half an hour by car from the provincial capital. It extends along the summit area of Monte Bonifato, a relief that is part of the vast limestone complex running along the western coast of the island between the province of Palermo and Monte Erice.

Throughout the area the mountain slopes are characterised by limestone rock and vast surfaces are colonised by robust tufted grasses such as Ampelodesmos, more commonly known as Disa, a species resistant to grazing and fire, which forms extensive grasslands along the most eroded slopes. Monte Bonifato has also undergone these processes of degradation of its plant cover, which is why its lower slopes today appear bare and rocky.

The summit, on the other hand, was subjected in past decades to repeated reforestation, which led to the creation of a dense wood consisting mainly of stone pine, Aleppo pine and cypress. Although it is therefore composed of species not native to the area, the Bosco di Alcamo represents a green area of some interest both for the development and balance achieved by its tree vegetation and for its recreational function. The presence of a dense plant cover has also played an irreplaceable role in preserving the soil from erosion, and may facilitate the reintroduction of native trees such as holm oaks, ash trees and downy oaks, which are still present in the wood in good numbers and show a remarkable capacity for regeneration.

The dense vegetation of this reserve hosts a distinctive fauna, as it constitutes a wooded area relatively isolated from the surrounding territory. Several species typical of Sicilian woodland are found here, among them the serin, the greenfinch and the tits (great tit and blue tit). In the Bosco d’Alcamo a few reptile species find refuge, among them the western whip snake, the most common Sicilian snake, whose entirely black colour gives it the dialect name “serpe niura”, and the Italian wall lizard.

Among the mammals, of particular interest is a small rodent with a distinctive black mask over its eyes and at the sides of its head, and a clear tuft of black fur at the tip of its tail: the garden dormouse, a species more closely related to the edible dormouse than to common field mice.

The Bosco di Alcamo, although the result of reforestation with non-native species, nevertheless constitutes a habitat of some importance for the animal communities it hosts, which are no less varied and interesting than those of other natural woods in Sicily.
