Un paesaggio rimasto intattoA landscape that remained intact
The “Belice Integral Nature Reserve” covers a short stretch of the southern Sicilian coast and is of unique naturalistic interest, since it has preserved intact the natural landscape which in the past distinguished the whole Mediterranean coastline of the island, characterised by deep expanses of dunes typical of the African coasts.
In the stretch of very fine sandy shore extending between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo we find a natural complex consisting of a system of two dune ridges, up to six metres high, extending for about 5 km and reaching inland for as much as 70/80 metres, and of an estuary area extremely rich in now-rare marsh vegetation.
Flora e faunaFlora and fauna
Both the dunes and the river mouth, despite climatic conditions typical of sub-tropical climates, host a plant and animal community of considerable interest. Among the plants adapted to this difficult environment, the highly fragrant sea lily stands out in particular, now extremely rare in Sicily because of the disturbance caused by humans to the delicate ecosystem where this flower lives, and also the sea sedge with its distinctive spikelets; the sea rocket with its fragrant flowers; the yellow horned poppy; the spiny sea holly; the sea bindweed with its beautiful pink inflorescence; the sea eryngium with its sturdy spines; the aromatic beach santolina; the restharrow, enhanced by tiny yellow flowers, and then also the small tamarisk trees and the spectacular acacias. Near the beautiful mouth of the Belice and along its banks, a rich marsh vegetation takes root, characterised among other things by reeds, sedges and some species of Typhaceae.
From a faunal point of view the whole environmental complex is equally important, since the particular environmental conditions mean that at the mouth of the Belice very many birds stop over, among them grey herons, kingfishers, rollers, ducks and gulls, as well as other distinctive species that nest and breed within the Reserve (reed warblers, woodchat shrikes), while in the hollows behind the dunes, where water from the water table often collects, it is not hard to spot, among other birds, cuckoos, rollers and orioles. Also significant is the presence of numerous arthropod species, among them the singular big-headed cricket and, among reptiles, the green lizard, the largest Sicilian lizard. Finally, it seems that sea turtles come to lay their eggs on these splendid beaches.
