Segesta, one of the main cities of the Elymians, Hellenic in appearance and culture, was one of the most important centres of Sicily and of the Mediterranean basin. After destroying its rival Selinunte together with the Carthaginians, Segesta was conquered and destroyed by Syracuse. Il Tempio e il TeatroThe Temple and the Theatre
C. e in seguito rimaneggiato dai Romani. Its most remarkable monuments are the Doric Temple (430–420 BC), which has been compared to the Parthenon for its refinement — a sight not to be missed, also for its excellent state of preservation — and, on the summit of Monte Barbaro, the Theatre, built between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC and later reworked by the Romans.
With a diameter of 63 m and around 20 tiers carved into the rock, it is one of the finest theatres of antiquity. Recent excavations have brought to light the original entrance and the link that connected the theatre to the agora. Every year the theatre hosts a season of classical performances organised by the Municipality of Calatafimi Segesta.
