Selinunte è la più occidentale delle colonie greche in Sicilia ed una delle più ricche città dell’isola; essa rappresenta la più forte testimonianza della presenza greca in provincia di Trapani; venne fondata dai megaresi nel VII secolo a.C. Conobbe ricchezza e splendore fin quando venne distrutta dai Cartaginesi che si erano alleati con la sua nemica storica, Segesta.Selinunte is the westernmost of the Greek colonies in Sicily and one of the richest cities on the island; it represents the strongest evidence of the Greek presence in the province of Trapani. It was founded by the Megarians in the 7th century BC. It enjoyed wealth and splendour until it was destroyed by the Carthaginians, who had allied themselves with its historic enemy, Segesta.
Selinunte è al centro del più grande parco archeologico del Mediterraneo, colonne e rovine di colossali templi greci sono i resti della città, sita presso la foce del fiume dove cresce ancora il prezzemolo selvatico (Selinon) che diede il nome al corso d’acqua ed alla città.Selinunte lies at the centre of the largest archaeological park in the Mediterranean; columns and ruins of colossal Greek temples are the remains of the city, located near the mouth of the river where wild parsley (Selinon) still grows — the plant that gave its name to the watercourse and to the city.

Il Parco archeologico di Selinunte è il più grande di tutto il Mediterraneo. Gli scavi hanno finora portato alla luce 7 templi di stile dorico, contrassegnati con lettere dell’alfabeto; tra questi, il più notevole è il Tempio G, che misura 110 metri per 55, uno dei più grandi di tutta l’architettura greca. Sono stati riportati alla luce anche il Santuario di Malophoros, dedicato a Demetra, quello di Zeus Meilichios e tre necropoli.The Archaeological Park of Selinunte is the largest in the whole Mediterranean. Excavations have so far brought to light 7 Doric temples, marked with letters of the alphabet; among these, the most notable is Temple G, measuring 110 by 55 metres, one of the largest in all Greek architecture. Also brought to light were the Sanctuary of Malophoros, dedicated to Demeter, that of Zeus Meilichios, and three necropolises.
Il Tempio “C”, che risale alla prima metà del VI sec. a.C., è uno dei più antichi esempi di architettura templare dorica esistente. Il Tempio “E” è il più suggestivo, data la sua quasi totale ricostruzione, e le metope figurate che ornavano la sua parte frontale. Testimonianza dell’antica arte dei Selinuntini è l’originale statuetta dell’Efebo.Temple “C”, dating from the first half of the 6th century BC, is one of the oldest existing examples of Doric temple architecture. Temple “E” is the most evocative, given its almost complete reconstruction, and the figured metopes that adorned its front. Evidence of the ancient art of the people of Selinunte is the original statuette of the Ephebe.
Il Tempio “D” è il più arcaico, costruito intorno alla metà del VI sec. a.C. a poca distanza del Tempio “C”, si trova nella Acropoli.Temple “D” is the most archaic, built around the middle of the 6th century BC a short distance from Temple “C”; it is located in the Acropolis.
Selinunte è immersa nella grande oasi naturale della riserva del fiume Belice e, a pochi passi dal parco archeologico, si trova una profonda e lunghissima spiaggia costeggiata da alcune pinete.Selinunte is immersed in the great natural oasis of the Belice river reserve and, a few steps from the archaeological park, there is a deep and very long beach bordered by pine woods.
