A soli 10 km dal centro storico di Trapani, in cima al Monte San Giuliano, sorge Erice, “Città della scienza e della pace”, sede del Centro Internazionale di Cultura Scientifica “Ettore Majorana”, fondato e diretto dal fisico Antonino Zichichi.Just 10 km from Trapani’s old town, on the summit of Monte San Giuliano, stands Erice, “City of science and peace”, home of the “Ettore Majorana” International Centre for Scientific Culture, founded and directed by the physicist Antonino Zichichi.
Come tutta la Sicilia, Erice conobbe molteplici dominazioni: elimi e punici nell’antichità per essere, successivamente, bizantina, araba, normanna; proprio di epoca normanna è il Castello di Venere, che, con le sue grandiose torri merlate, domina il territorio circostante offrendo un panorama stupefacente che nei giorni più limpidi arriva fino alle coste d’Africa.Like all of Sicily, Erice knew many rulers: Elymians and Punics in antiquity, then Byzantine, Arab and Norman; the Castle of Venus dates precisely from the Norman period and, with its grand crenellated towers, dominates the surrounding area offering an astonishing panorama that on the clearest days reaches as far as the coast of Africa.
Erice fu tappa quasi obbligata per i naviganti, sia per la sua posizione strategica nel Mediterraneo, sia per il suo celebre tempio dedicato al culto della fertilità e dell’amore, alla Venere Ericina, venerata come Astarte dai fenici e Afrodite dai greci. Dell’antico tempio, citato da storici come Polibio e cantato da poeti come Virgilio, rimangono alcune sezioni di colonne e frammenti di cornice che risalgono al rifacimento romano del I secolo d.C., conservati nel Museo Civico; il recinto del tempio e alcuni ruderi si trovano all’interno del castello normanno.Erice was an almost obligatory stop for sailors, both for its strategic position in the Mediterranean and for its famous temple dedicated to the cult of fertility and love, to Venus Erycina, worshipped as Astarte by the Phoenicians and Aphrodite by the Greeks. Of the ancient temple, mentioned by historians such as Polybius and sung by poets such as Virgil, there remain some sections of columns and fragments of cornice dating from the Roman rebuilding of the 1st century AD, preserved in the Civic Museum; the temple enclosure and some ruins are inside the Norman castle.

Il fascino arcano di Erice risiede nell’insieme delle caratteristiche che la rendono unica: nel labirinto delle sue strade selciate, nei suoi cortiletti fioriti, nel suo impianto urbanistico medievale, nelle decine di chiese e monasteri, nei palazzi barocchi che caratterizzano il paese, nelle cosiddette “mura ciclopiche”, la cinta muraria di cui sono rimaste tre porte di epoca medievale, formata da grosse pietre poligonali sovrapposte che testimoniano il carattere di fortezza di Erice nell’antichità.The arcane charm of Erice lies in the combination of features that make it unique: in the labyrinth of its cobbled streets, in its flowered courtyards, in its medieval urban layout, in its dozens of churches and monasteries, in the Baroque palaces that characterise the town, in the so-called “cyclopean walls”, the city wall of which three medieval gates remain, made of large superimposed polygonal stones that testify to Erice’s character as a fortress in antiquity.
