L’artigianato del coralloThe craft of coral

The craft of coral brought the coral workers of Trapani great renown throughout the Mediterranean basin between the 15th and 17th centuries. Jewellery, sculptures, rosaries, crucifixes, Madonnas and cherubs, but also holy water fonts, chalices, monstrances, candlesticks and bed-head panels, as well as bracelets, rings, necklaces, horns and pendants, caskets, frames and small nativity scenes made by the artists of Trapani were highly sought after throughout the Mediterranean.

Today both the fishing and the working of coral have almost entirely disappeared, above all because of the scarcity of raw material; the coral banks rich in yield off the coast of Trapani were indiscriminately depleted for too long, causing the present shortage. Coral, in fact, consists of a branched stem produced by the secretion of a particular variety of polyp colony. Among the various species and colours in existence, Trapani red is among the most valuable, thanks also to the workmanship that enhances it.

At the Pepoli Regional Museum, located in the premises of the former Carmelite convent adjoining the Church of the Annunziata, numerous coral works of excellent craftsmanship can be admired. The Museum is rich in artistic, craft and archaeological evidence.

In the painting section the oldest work is a Byzantine-style fresco from a church in Erice, while among the 14th-century works a Madonna with Child stands out, a fragment of a fresco of the Tuscan school, and the Pietà by Roberto di Oderisio, one of the highest expressions of Gothic art in all of southern Italy. From the 1400s date the Virgin crowning St Catherine, a polyptych by an unknown author; the Madonna enthroned with Child by an artist of the Iberian school; and a Madonna of the Flemish school. From the 1500s are St Francis receiving the stigmata, a canvas attributed to Titian, and St Francis adoring the Crucifix by Ludovico Carracci, while a panel with Venus and Cupid is from the French school of Fontainebleau. Among the 17th-century paintings the most significant is Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife by Mattia Preti and the monochrome panel with Drinkers by the Dutch painter Jan Miense Molenaer.

The section devoted to the minor arts documents the economic and artistic activities of Trapani in the period from the 1600s to the 1800s.
