Palazzi e monumentiPalaces and monuments

Trapani preserves many monuments of its past history, palaces and a great many churches. Among the most important palaces are the Baroque town hall, Palazzo Cavarretta, the ancient seat of the Trapani Senate, Palazzo Riccio di San Gioacchino, and Casa Ciambra or Palazzo della Giudecca, with its rich diamond-point façade, a distinctive 15th-century building in the old Jewish quarter of the Giudecca.

The oldest evidence that Trapani preserves dates back only to the 14th century, while almost no trace remains of the Arab architecture, abundant in palaces, markets and mosques, which according to the writings of the time characterised it in the 9th and 10th centuries.

The oldest monument in the city is the Colombaia (Torre Peliade), an integral part of the 14th-century harbour fortifications, an octagonal tower rising on an islet in front of the port, today in a state of complete decay.

The façade of the Church of Sant’Agostino dates from the mid-14th century and, with its very rich rose window and pointed-arch portal, is a classic example of Sicilian Gothic tinged with Arab-Norman influences. Contemporary with it is the Church of S. Domenico, of whose original architecture the rose window of the façade and the internal staircase of the bell tower remain, while the Church of S. Maria di Gesù, whose façade combines Gothic and Renaissance forms, dates from the 1500s. Its interior, in Catalan Gothic style, preserves a work of admirable craftsmanship and great value: the Madonna of the Angels, a glazed terracotta by Andrea della Robbia.

A significant example of the so-called Plateresque style, widespread in Spain in the 16th century, is the Church of the Collegio, one of the most important Baroque documents on the entire island. The façade, preceded by a portico, of the Cathedral Church dedicated to S. Lorenzo dates from the 1700s and preserves inside a Crucifixion attributed to Van Dyck, as does that of the Church of the Holy Souls of the Purgatorio, whose façade was designed by the architect G.B. Amico and which contains the 20 sacred groups of the Mysteries.

At the end of the strip reaching out into the sea with its characteristic double-sickle shape, on which Trapani’s old town stands, is Torre di Ligny, a fortress built in 1671 on the rocks, inside which the Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory is housed, and which marks the final part of Trapani, of Sicily… of Europe.

About two kilometres from the old town is the Sanctuary of the Annunziata, of the 14th century, whose original façade has a fine rose window and a 15th-century Gothic portal, while the Baroque bell tower dates from 1650 and the interior was entirely rebuilt in the 18th century. In the Chapel of the Sailors, of the 1500s, Gothic, Arab and Renaissance architecture merge. In a 17th-century chapel is the Madonna of Trapani, greatly venerated by the people of Trapani, a fine 14th-century statue attributed to Nino Pisano or his school.

The monuments of Trapani and its province are, in any case, very numerous and of an interest that goes beyond any dry, limiting list that would condition their discovery and appreciation.

I MisteriThe Mysteries

In a rite that recurs every year, always new and always the same, mystical and carnal at once, are the Mysteries, the event which on Good Friday, to the slow and haunting cadence of funeral marches, unfolds through the streets of the city all Friday afternoon and night and until late on Saturday morning.

It is a procession that re-enacts the passion and death of Christ, made up of twenty extremely heavy vare, wooden groups worked in canvas and glue, carried on the shoulders of the bearers known as massari, who — with ancient rhythms, sounds and movements — make the event an unusual spectacle, whose origin dates back to the 16th century but has its roots in pre-Christian rites linked to the spring awakening of nature.

The origin of the procession is attributed to the Confraternity of the Most Precious Blood of Christ, which entrusted the creation of the first sacred groups to expert craftsmen who, with wood, canvas and glue, using an unusual technique called carchet, brought the representations of the Way of the Cross to life. Later the groups were entrusted to the representatives of the arts and trades organised in the consolati, who to this day take care of organising this extraordinary, spectacular representation.

At Erice Vetta, at the same time, a Mysteries Procession takes place formed of five wooden groups depicting the Passion of Jesus Christ, evocative and moving for the enchanted atmosphere created in the medieval alleyways against the backdrop of a landscape of rare beauty.

On Maundy Thursday, instead, the living Mysteries take place in Marsala, a re-enactment of the Way of the Cross performed and staged by local volunteers.
